15 December 2008

Alexis

My dear readers,  my heart weighs heavy with the events that have unfolded in Greece in recent days. On the night of December 6, 2008, tragedy struck with the killing of a 15-year-old child named Alexandros Grigoropoulos at the hands of a policeman.

In the wake of this tragedy, the youth of Greece rose up in rebellion, their voices demanded justice for Alexandros and accountability from those in power. Police stations were bombarded with stones, riots nearly destroyed cities, and chaos reigned in the streets.

Society is alive, pulsating with the energy of those who refuse to remain silent in the face of injustice. Anna, was among those who took to the streets in protest against the police. And i feel pride, she is worthy to call me mother.

Police exists to protect and serve, not to kill.  The youth of Greece, refuse to be silenced in the face of oppression and injustice. May their voices be heard, and may their actions pave the way for a brighter and more just future for Greece.

Freedom is alive when humanity wants it.
